Advanced mixing techniques with Albert Neve

At one of our recent Twitch sessions, we were lucky enough to have Albert Neve with us. Albert is one of the most important producers and DJs in Spain and internationally, with a long professional career within the music industry and the author of tracks that have been played millions of times on streaming platforms. He’s also worked with such important artists such as Steve Aoki and David Guetta, and has played festivals on the level of Tomorrowland and Ultra.

We are also lucky that Albert recorded a Masterclass with us on Advanced Production and Mixing Techniques. In this Masterclass he teaches us all his production techniques and composition of tracks, among which we find some very interesting ways to build breaks and drops, treat vocals and kick correctly, or make synths sound more powerful.

He also goes in depth about how to achieve a clear mix, giving keys to know how to give the space that each element of the track needs and make it fit with the rest, applying techniques such as subtractive equalization, mid/side, parallel distortion, or sidechain compression.

There are no specific techniques for each musical style

An important and very interesting idea, to open our minds as producers, is that the mixing and mastering techniques do not have to change according to the musical style of the tracks.

On the one hand, there are a whole series of basic points that, regardless of the musical genre, must be fulfilled in order to achieve good quality sound (for example: give the necessary space to the different elements of a track, achieve adequate gain staging, etc.). On the other hand, it is interesting to know as many techniques as possible, independently of the style they come from, to have more resources and to be more creative when it comes to having your own sound.

Furthermore, mixing techniques can be applied in any DAW. There are DAWs that have some native plugins that can make some procedures easier than others, but normally, all DAWs have all the essential tools to achieve a good mix. Of course, you have to know your DAW in detail. That is why Albert Neve has also provided us with his best tricks with Logic Pro, the program that he uses, and whose Masterclass you can find here.

The experience of more than 20 years producing

Although we have said that it is good to know the more techniques the better, it is perhaps even more important to put them into practice and perfect them, especially the most effective ones. This is what Albert Neve has done for more than 20 years producing music and, therefore, we have a lot to learn from him. From the habits developed to be more effective in the studio, to the most creative tips to achieve your own sound, through essential techniques that you have to know how to perform well if you want to achieve a good result.

Albert Neve talks about all this in our Twitch session, which you can see again now in the following video. Do not miss everything he tells us about advanced mixing, and the clear answers he gave to all the questions from the users who were in the live chat.
